The Food Cooking Show Fascination

The premise is simple. Take a chef, put him or her into the kitchen and watch them prepare their signature dishes. You might think that this would be boring after a bit but the public has proven this wrong.

Food cooking shows are the "in" thing right now. We love the idea of making food and combine it with reality television and suddenly we come back week after week to see what happens next.

Fox Network has uncovered a phenomenon with the cursing antics of Chef Gordon Ramsey. We cringe at his explosive attitude yet are somehow sympathetic at his attempts to turn would-be chefs into professionals.

We might not want to put ourselves on the line of fire but we love watching other contestants wither under his furious stare and tirades. Our kitchens may not be stocked with fois gras but we still take something away from each episode.

Food Network has a reality show titled "Who Wants to Be the Next Food Network Star" where amateur and professional cooks alike are given tasks to perform that somehow weed out the would-be television chefs from the rest.

We root for our favorite contestants as the season progresses until only one contestant remains. He or she is then given a food cooking show of their very own.

What is the fascination with meal preparation shows? Perhaps it is the ease at which dishes are prepared. It might be the professional cookware and charming personality of the hosts.

Some of the most popular meal preparation show hosts is not formally educated at cooking schools. Thus they give us hope that anyone can prepare delectable dishes from the comfort of their own home.

Whatever the reason behind our fascination, these shows has become an integral part of television viewing. As great chefs from the past such as Julia Child pass on, a new generation of friendly, knowledgeable faces comes to the forefront of culinary society.

The Joy Of Fondue

While Homer's Iliad may record the first ever fondue party, most fondue memories only date back as far as the late 1960's when it became extremely popular in the US. While some trends fade away never to return, the joy of Fondue lives forever.

Last Holiday - Movie Review

Georgia Byrd (Queen Latifah) works in Kragen's Department Store in New Orleans where she demonstrates and sells cookware. She longs to open her own restaurant but she is very practical and down-to-earth and doesn't seriously consider that as an option. She has a crush on another employee at the store, Sean Williams (LL Cool J), who seems to return the feeling. However, both are too shy to pursue a relationship.

One day Georgia has an accident and bumps her head hard on a cabinet. Sean takes her down to the doctor's office inside the store where she is given a CAT scan by a company doctor. The tests show that she has a rare disorder called Lampington's Disease and she has only a few weeks to live without an operation. The company insurance doesn't cover the operation and she cannot afford to pay for it herself. At first depressed with the thought of dying, she rapidly decides to live her life to the fullest while she still can.

She cleans out her bank account and flies to the Grandhotel Pupp in the Czech Republic. This luxurious hotel is where her favorite chef works, Chef Didier (Grard Depardieu). She takes the very expensive Presidential Suite and is believed by the staff to be very wealthy. She shops for some nice clothes and enjoys the hotel's spa services. When she goes to the restaurant she decides to order everything on the menu, drawing the attention of Chef Didier. He comes out to meet her and they discuss the joys of food.

Also staying at the hotel is Matthew Kragen, the owner of the chain of department store that she used to work for. With him is his mistress/assistant,a congressman, and a senator from her home state of Louisiana. She meets all of them and Kragen becomes suspicious of her, thinking that she is some kind of corporate spy. He hires a woman on the staff, Miss Gunter to look for any clues in her room. Miss Gunter finds and reads a letter that Georgia had written with instructions to follow after her death. She changes her mind about Georgia and returns Kragen's money, but not until after she has revealed that Georgia used to work for his store and is not some jet-setting socialite. Miss Gunter lets the news of Georgia's impending death slip to other employees and they are sad as they've came to like and respect Georgia's attitude toward life.

She tries to go back home but finds that the road leading from the hotel to the airport is blocked by an avalanche. On the other side of the avalanche is Sean, who had learned from Dr. Gupta about Georgia's illness and had decided to come to Europe to be with her for her final days. She returns to the hotel and Sean leaves his taxi and starts off on foot around the avalanche.

That night at the New Year's Eve party the kitchen is short staffed and Georgia helps Chef Didier with cooking the meal for the evening. He is very emotional, letting her that he knows of her disease and how much he has enjoyed knowing her. When she returns to her table Kragen tells everyone that she is an ex-employee of his, expecting to humiliate her. She admits that she let them believe what they wanted to believe and then told them about her fatal disease. Everybody is disgusted with Kragen and desert him in favor of Georgia.

Kragen continues drinking by himself, becomes depressed, and climbs out onto a high ledge and thinks about committing suicide. Georgia joins him and convinces him that he can still be happy, just not living his life the way he has in the past. While they are on the ledge they hear a voice calling to her. Sean had finally made it to the hotel. Miss Gunter finds a fax that had fallen behind the fax machine. It was from Dr. Gupta and it said that the CAT scan machine was faulty, that she did not have Lampington's Disease, and she would live.

Georgia and Sean go back to New Orleans and the next time we see them it is opening night for Georgia's restaurant. Chef Didier shows up and makes his way to the kitchen. Another famous chef and one of Georgia's long-time favorites to show up is Emeril Lagasse, making a cameo appearance as himself.

My Recommendation

Personally, my wife and I love this movie and plan to watch it during the holiday season every year. It is funny, heart warming, and it makes us feel good. The film critic Roger Ebert said "Last Holiday plays like a hug." I agree. Queen Latifah was perfectly cast and did a wonderful job with her role.

Grard Depardieu was funny and believable as the over-the-top chef who knows the secret to life, "butter!" and LL Cool J had another great supporting role as the boyfriend.

The scenery at the hotel was beautiful and made me want to learn how to use a snow board. Not as fast as Georgia did in the film, but maybe a couple of turns down the bunny slope would be okay.

Camper Cooking Tips

No matter how long you have been venturing into the woods, there are always some new tips you can find that help you to feed yourself and your crew better along the way. Here are some pointers on setting up your Camp Kitchen, selecting your cooking gear and utensils, and making life easier for you, the camp chef. Cooking can be a simple process, hot water for instant oatmeal or hot dogs on a stick; or you can push the field gourmet envelope with fresh goodies baked over an open fire, or a handmade oven stack. Whether you fancy yourself the "Emeril" of the forest or just a short order camp cook, hopefully these tips will help you.

-Always bring extra matches; Preferably waterproof. Some might prefer the non-safety type so they can strike anywhere.

-Plan a simple and filling menu. Less ingredients and ample supply designed to fuel your crew is preferable.

-Write down a menu checklist for your entire trip... you don't want to leave that all important spice ingredient behind!

-Measure, combine and label each meal's dry ingredients (by cooking step of course) in heavy-duty Ziploc bags prior to packing. This speeds up your cook time.

-Bring a grate to put over the fire. Not every campsite will have a grill or one that suits your cooking needs.

-Purchase a dish set, silverware, dishpan, washrag, towels, and soap just for your camping trips and keep them in a plastic container. Pre-packing is always a help.

-Purchase a quality camp stove, with at least two burners (for campground or group cooking). Propane stoves are easiest to use (but you have to discard on site or carry out the cylinders), while white gas stoves produce more heat (but you need to carry the liquid fuel with you).

-Pre-cooked meals that travel well in a cooler will save a lot of time, especially on the first night of your trip. Meats, especially, will last longer in the cooler than raw.

-Pack small amounts of cooking supplies. It will save quite a bit of packing space.

-Carry instant or dried soups to serve with meals on cold or rainy days.

- Use block ice in your cooler since it will last longer than cubes.

-Make your cookout a family or group activity. Bring along food that everyone can participate in cooking: like hotdogs on a sharpened stick or even potatoes that the kids can help peel. Don't forget the marshmallows and "s'mores."
